When I was youngster living in Pretoria, the first mall built I this city was Arcadia Centre. It had a restaurant called “Lord Sandwich” and it gave a brief biography of the 4th Lord Sandwich, John Montagu. John, who was born this day in 1718, was given loads of important work to do in the empire; he developed the British navy and the postal service in England. Apparently he loved gambling and would not leave the gambling table for hours on end. He instructed his butler to provide him with slices of meat between two slices of bread. A dish which became known as the sandwich.
