it takes a special man to be the father of a great man. Born this day in 1899, Martin Luther King senior was a remarkable man. Baptist minister, missionary, and early leader in the United States civil rights movement and political activist, Martin Luther King senior was originally named Michael but changed his name and the name of his son in 1934 after his trip to Germany and the inspiration he gained from the life of Martin Luther.
He changed his political allegiance as well, from the Republican Party to the Democrats in 1960 and was a major factor in swinging the African American vote behind Jimmy Carter’s campaign for the presidency in the 1970’s.
The father to Martin Luther King Junior had the very sad and singular tragedy of burying all his three children before he died in 1984.
