When I was in my last year at school I was a cheerleader. This meant rousing the boys to shout and chant in support of our team. It was an intense experience and it was based on the idea of the onlooker effect.
Today in 1898, Minnesota University student, Johny Campbell founded cheerleading when he directed a crowd in cheering “Rah, Rah, Rah! Ski-u-mah, Hoo-Rah! Hoo-Rah! Varsity! Varsity! Varsity, Minn-e-So-Tah!”, making Campbell the very first cheerleader. His cheerleading was credited with ending the University of Minnesota football team’s seven game losing streak.
Today cheerleading is an intense physical activity practiced by over 1.5 million youngsters and accounting for over 60% of sports injuries.
