Sigismund Schlomo Freud died today in 1939. His cancer was so smelly that his favourite dog could not bear to be in the same room. Freud’s doctor, Schur administered lethal doses of Morphine that euthanized the founder of psychoanalysis.
Freud’s death came 29 years to the day before Padre Pio’s death in 1968. Saint Pio Pietrelcina was a famous mystic and stigmatic whose cult has a large following around the world.
These two people, in many ways represent the parameters of our civilization. Freud regarded monotheistic religion as an illusion based upon childish needs for a father figure and a collective guilt at our murderous feelings towards the father. Padre Pio, on the other hand lived in a mystical union with God, experiencing visions and spiritual suffering.
