Today we celebrate the kind of political compromises that made our country.
King Shaka was not the kind of man who liked compromise. He fashioned the Zulu nation through war, death and pillage. His own unseemly death today in 1828 is a fitting moment to celebrate what has become South Africa’s Heritage day. Initially Shaka day was not going to be part of any public holiday when our new democracy was formed but the predominantly Zulu; Inkatha Freedom Party objected to this exclusion. This is how Heritage Day began; as a compromise.
In effect today is regarded as national braai day because across the land tens of thousands of people gather today to braai. A truly South African compromise which itself compromises the officious verities of our heritage.
