Michaelmas. The day when the Archangel Michael beat the devil in the battle for heaven and cast him out to eternal perdition.
In England the devil is traditionally said to have landed in a blackberry bush and spat upon it. That is why blackberries are not supposed to be picked after today. For those of you who use blackberry phones remember that day on the 10 October 2011 when over 80 million users had their services cut? Perhaps the devil had something to do with it?
Whatever you may think of the Archangel Michael or the Devil and blackberries, Michaelmas is the official start of winter and the academic year in Europe. It is also the start of the judicial calendar in both Europe and the United States.
