Saint Barbara’s day. Gunners and artillery soldiers the world over recognize Saint Barbara as their patron. In Lebanon, Syria and the Jordan today is Eid il-Burbara, a sort of Halloween day for Christians. The city of Santa Barbara in California is named after her as the priest who founded the original mission around which the town was built, had survived a violent storm at sea before landing.
This patron saint of explosives, lightning and storms and gunners is celebrated on the same day that observant Jews pray for rain and the is also the Day of Shango, the god of lightning and thunder and fire among the Yoruba and in Santerian Vodou.
She almost certainly did not exist.
