A great humanitarian, dissident, poet and leader was born today in 1936. Vaclav Havel was the kind of lefty that understood how fascist communism can be. Upon the liberation of Czechoslovakia, Have3l became its president but resigned when it became clear that Slovakia was going to cede from the Czech Republic.

Havel died in 2003 at the age of 75.

In 2012, the Vaclav Havel prize for creative dissent was established to celebrate those who do what Havel did.
