There were many persecutions against Christians in the Roman Empire. The last and most destructive lasted for 11 years and was authored by the Emperor Diocletian. Christians refusing to offer tributes to the Roman gods were tortured and killed across most of the Empire.
Diocletian himself became ill in 305 and retired from public life to a palace in what is today the town of Split in Croatia. Today the Cathedral of Saint Domnius stands atop Diocletian’s tomb.
Sic semper Tyrannis.
