Today in 1941 the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbour. The Japanese launched 353 aircraft in a surprise attack on the United States naval base at Pearl harbour. In all 2,402 Americans were killed and over 100 of their planes destroyed. The Japanese lost 29 planes and 5 midget submarines with 65 servicemen killed or wounded.
The attack on Pearl Harbour led directly to the United States of America entering the war on the side of the Allies. A decision that almost certainly tipped the balance of power in the Second World War against the Axis Powers.
Curiously the United Nations marks this day as the International Civil Aviation day.
